The top 3 mistakes of intermittent fasting beginners

Intermittent Fasting May 16, 2020

Intermittent fasting is straight-forward for experienced practitioners and it becomes an easy habit like drinking water in the morning.

However, beginners can easily fall into some common traps.

In this article, I want to help you navigate some of the common beginner mistakes while intermittent fasting.

1 — Not fasting long enough to see results

The most common mistake of beginners is that they underestimate the time required to see tangible results (e.g. weight loss, improved focus/energy etc.)

Based on research by well-known doctors and experts on intermittent fasting it takes between 3 and 4 weeks for the body to adapt to a new metabolic state.

This is why in SkipMeal we emphasize streaks and challenges to make sure you stick to intermittent fasting long enough to feel the difference.

So, give yourself time to adapt and trust in the process :)

2 — Eating unhealthy food during the feasting period

Many people eat burgers, sweets, and processed foods during the feasting period because they don’t see any negative impact.

However, the food you ingest is still a contributor to your overall health, but also to the intermittent fasting effectiveness.

Eating natural food and veggies ensures that you get the best out of the fasting, but also it contributes to shedding the extra pounds of fat from your body to get to the perfect lean body composition you dream of.

Avoiding sugar and processed food will contribute to overall health and prevention of disease.

3 — Not fasting at least 14 or 16 hours every day (for woman and man respectively)

There is a lot of science behind intermittent fasting practices. It is very well known that you should fast at least a certain number of hours to activate the positive metabolic effects of intermittent fasting related to fat burning, increased growth-hormone production, enhanced brain function, insulin sensitivity, and others.

The goal is to be very disciplined for a few weeks and to build a habit of fasting. After several weeks it will be seamless to go on indefinitely.

To be effective, the length of your daily fast must be at least 16 hours for men and around 14 hours for women. — Dr. Michael VanDerschelden.
